CANCER IS LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH
Prof. Muniruddin Ahmed
Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacology
University of Dhaka
Normal cells in the body follow a normal path of growth, division and death. Cancer cells continue to grow and divide abnormally neglecting the central command of the body. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grow out of control to form masses of tissue called TUMORS. In case of BLOOD CANCER (Leukemia) abnormal harmful cell division occurs in the blood stream. When tumor cells spread to other parts of the body and grow, invading and destroying other healthy tissues, it is called METASTASIS, a serious condition that is very difficult to treat. Tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation such as gamma and x-rays, UV light, and car exhaust fumes are all carcinogens ( cancer causing materials or radiations) which form free radicals in our body. These free radicals damage cells and DNA causing cancer. Early detection of cancer, particularly BREAST CANCER can greatly improve the odds for successful treatment and survival. Cancer treatment is expensive and dangerous, which generally involves SURGERY and/or RADIATION and/or CHEMOTHERAPY (use of medicines for killing cancer cells). Wrong diet, wrong lifestyle, physical inactivity, and obesity (excess body weight) are associated with the development of many types of cancer. To reduce the risk of cancer, maintain a healthy lifestyle with healthy food, quit smoking, take sufficient natural anti-oxidants like vitamin C, carotene, vitamin E, polyphenols from green tea, fruits, vegetable, fish oil etc, keep your body fit by exercise, drink sufficient water, avoid trans fat, red meat and carcinogens like estrogen for postmenopausal therapy.
May Allah give us a healthy life
